The Biomedical Research Institute (BRI) was founded in 1998 under the auspices of the General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GGET). The Institute operated initially as an independent entity, but in 2001 it merged with the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). FORTH is one of the largest, highly organized research Centers in Greece, with branches in Heraklion, Rethymnon, Patras and Ioannina. It is active in sectors of significant scientific, social and economic interest, specializing in areas such as infomatics, molecular biology, laser technology, telecommunications, microelectronic, robotics, biotechnology, materials science, chemical engineering and computational mathematics.

FORTH/BRI is located in Ioannina and focuses on:

  • Molecular medicine, with emphasis on regenerative medicine
  • Biomedical technology
  • Molecular epidemiology
